Talented Artist Calls Miami AZ HOME

Go Globe-Miami

Small town, #RuralArizona has a certain charm about it; it’s unique atmosphere, authentic community, and intriguing history, is the backbone of our state.  Locals appreciate and cherish it; while guests search for it and return. Globe-Miami tops this list and has long been known as a mining and ranching community, with generations of long standing, hardworking families.  Many locals have gone to bigger cities and shared their talents; many have remained to support our local economy.  For other folks, our community has become a new home; a new place to set roots.  Globe-Miami would not be what it is today without a combination of the above; and Miami resident and local artist Patty Sjolin is raising the bar.

We recently caught up with Patty to learn more about her discovery of Miami, her countless community contributions, and some interesting facts about her storied past!

Q) How long have you called Miami, AZ home?

A) 4 years

Q) What inspired you to set roots in the small mining community of Miami?

A) I came to visit my daughter that at the time was living in Miami. She took me downtown on Sullivan St. and I fell in love with it. I moved down a year later, just as my daughter got a teaching job down in Tucson and left me here! But I became so involved with the Town that I became a part of it.

Q) Tell us more about your efforts to beautify Highway 60 going thru Miami?

A) The project with the large pots at the edge of town was started a little over a year ago. It was a joint effort by the Town Manager, Joe Heatherly and the head of public works, Tom Moreno. The pots are actually old sewer manhole collars that were going to the landfill; but Joe and Tom came up with the idea to turn them into flower/tree pots and asked if I would be interested in painting them. We actually have four more base coated and ready for painting; and you’ll see them out there soon!

Q) How many murals have you completed throughout Globe-Miami?

Over 20!

Q) If you had to pick your favorite mural, what would it be? What is the story behind it?

A) I love them all and each one will always hold a special moment in time for me. One of the first ones I did was the apartment building that everyone remembers as the Hilary building; yes, it was misspelled, but it was an eye soar and a blemish on the Town of Miami. The Town couldn’t do anything about it because it was private property and freedom of speech. The Town Centennial was coming up and I offered to paint a mural, free of charge to the owner, to help mark the centennial. With the help of many, we got it pushed through! Another problem solved by thinking outside the box!

Go Globe-MiamiThe abandoned lot next to Guayo’s El Rey is another favorite; it is such a calming area. Gregg and Doreen from Guayo’s donated the first bench, while Tony and Esther Sanchez sponsored a mural that will let them relive the days of dancing forever. Linda and Jay from the Class of 1965 also sponsored a mural for all the classmates that are no longer with us.

I love the mural at the Miami Library because I got to work with Delvan and Roy to really pull out their love of their job and the books they love. The Bullion Plaza Museum mural was fantastic to work on with the input of Tom Foster, the joy of Cliff and all the volunteers at the museum. I remember one of them saying it’s great but why is it back here in the corner, I just remember saying “this is just the beginning!” Hopefully I will get the opportunity to do more amazing things there!

The Rooster on Dick’s Chicken was a scary one because I was getting rid of a 50+ year iconic chicken...times change and I loved working with the Perez family.

Shoot, I just reread the question...you said one favorite....oh, and the sailboats, with the kids! I always want to go “fix” that one, but I keep telling myself the kids did it. Leave it alone, they did get a big kick out of putting their handprints under the bridge!

Q) Tell us more about your recent work with Artist Isaac Caruso?

A) I met Isaac Caruso when he came through and had a meeting with Superior, Florence and Miami. He had sent an email out to all of the towns and cities in Arizona to help with a book illustrated by murals. He is an amazing artist that has traveled the world doing murals! He gets a lot of grants through the Arts Endowment and I was anxious to talk with him when he came to paint the mural in Miami. I live across the street from where he was working so his dog “goose“ was able to chase all the feral cats in my protected yard while Isaac painted. I could watch his progress from my back porch; he uses spray cans and the traditional brush and roller. He was so at ease with himself and his work, I was sad to see him leave!

Q) Tell us more about your recent collaboration with Waggin Vineyard in Globe?

A) Donna by Design told Tim and Daisy, owners of Waggin Vineyard, about my skills of painting on tin. Tim wanted to try and do his wine labels painted on old rusted tin he had pulled off a 100-year-old barn; that is how it all started 3 years ago! When it came time to build their tasting room, I was asked to do various art pieces throughout including a mural on the outside. They have done a wonderful job, with a touch of class! I have designed 4 labels and working on a new one as we speak!

Then Tim and Daisy thought...how about doing some art classes at the vineyard and we could call it Van Gogh in the Vineyard? Our first class was a rendition of “Sunflowers” by Van Gogh; this was all before COVID-19 had reared its ugly head. The classes have steadily grown since that first sunflower and we have since moved the classes outside on the patio for better social distancing. Nothing better than drinking a glass of wine to unwind, while painting on a fun night out!

Q) If you had to share your favorite thing about Globe-Miami, what would it be?

A) I really love 3 traffic lights and when I can go to the movies, no lines! It is a slower pace of life here and when I go to the “valley” or Tucson to see my kids, I wonder, how can you live with all these people! It’s like going to another world! It’s exciting and full of wonders but I really love coming back home and thinking of what I can do to make this place more beautiful and enjoy life’s little pleasures!

Q) Where is your favorite place to grab a bite to eat in Miami?

A) Guayo’s El Rey for their yummy chicken chimichangas and margaritas; and Dick’s Chicken for their delicious cheeseburgers!

Q) What is one fun fact about your storied past as an artist?

A) I worked for Lisa Frank back in the 90’s as her concept artist. A lot of those little characters, those were my designs! This is why I like a lot of color, and of course rainbows and unicorns!
